Very timely Bill. I'm seeing a pick up in term conversion recommendations and new whole life recommendations from agents using the dividend rates of whole life as an IRR comparison to cash. After calculating the actual IRR on the whole life and a frank discussion of what's really important to the client (death benefit or cash value buildup), the client generally goes in a different direction.

Bill, I might add these questions: "Do you understand the difference between a withdrawal and a loan?" and "Do you understand that the projected income (policy loans) from the policy will be very different if you use wash loans verses market loans?" Pete

Hi Bill,
You see Guaranteed UL the way I see it. First of all, I can't even say UL and O.K. in the same sentence. I am not a fan. While looking over a Genworth GUL recently, I was bothered by all the disclosures and disclaimers about when a premium is paid. Heaven only knows when a person will pay their premium over the next 20 years, so what is the sense of thinking you may have a guarantee, when in fact you might loose it easily. I wasnt comfortable, so I didnt sell it, but I would like to know if their is a company you know of that isnt so sticky about the timing of the premium. Thank you, Gina Davis-Lloyd

Bill, you've stated it well and you are right on the mark. Consumers are well confused by this guaranteed market. Pete

bill- great article! i find your work very insightful and think we are of kindred spirit! keep up the good work! My firm has put over $35M of cash in clients pockets over the last 5 years both in death benefits and cash over and above their investment via settlements, and concur with your thoughts.
